Reddit Ads, for products people research.
Cheaper inventory than Meta, a genuinely different audience posture, and a platform that punishes marketing voice harder than any other. Worth running for some products and a waste of money for others – we will tell you which you are.

Why Reddit is different from every other paid channel
On Meta and TikTok people are being entertained and your ad interrupts. On Google they are looking for something and your ad answers. On Reddit they are usually researching a decision among people who have already made it – which is a third posture, and it changes what works.
It also has a property no other ad platform has: your ad has a comment section, and the audience uses it. An ad that overclaims gets corrected publicly, underneath itself.
When it is worth running
| Works well for | Works badly for |
|---|---|
| Products with an active subreddit around the category | Impulse purchases with no community |
| Considered purchases people research first | Anything needing immediate urgency to convert |
| Technical or hobbyist products with informed buyers | Broad consumer goods with no enthusiast base |
| Brands willing to be honest about trade-offs | Brands who need full message control |
| B2B tools where practitioners gather | Products whose buyers are not online communities |
Targeting: build the list by hand
Reddit's interest categories are broad enough to be nearly useless. A specific subreddit is the opposite – it is a precise, self-declared statement about what someone cares about, maintained by the people in it.
So we build subreddit lists manually, and deliberately include the small ones. A subreddit with forty thousand highly specific members frequently outperforms one with two million general ones, because concentration beats reach when the product is narrow.
Creative that survives the comments
The tonal rule is simple and almost universally broken: write the way a knowledgeable person explains something, not the way a brand announces something.
Specifically – name the trade-off before someone else does, avoid superlatives you cannot support, and do not use the stock-photo visual language that reads as advertising at a glance. Ads that acknowledge what the product is not for routinely outperform ads that claim it is for everyone, and the comment section is where you find out which you wrote.
The bigger reason to care about Reddit
Reddit accounts for roughly a quarter of all citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, and it appeared in the organic results for four of the five commercial agency queries we checked.
Paid reach is one reason to be on the platform. Being present where AI answers source their opinions is arguably the larger one – and that part cannot be bought, which is why we will not sell it to you.
Questions people actually ask
- Does Reddit advertising actually work?
- For products with a considered purchase and an active community around the category, often yes. Costs are typically lower than Meta because fewer advertisers compete there. For impulse products with no community, it usually underperforms – the audience is in research mode, not buying mode.
- Will Reddit users attack our ads?
- They will comment, and some comments will be critical. That is the platform working as intended. Ads that acknowledge trade-offs get a far better reception than ads written in marketing voice, and you can moderate your own ad comments if a thread becomes unproductive.
- Subreddit targeting or interest targeting?
- Hand-picked subreddits, almost always. Reddit's interest categories are broad, while a specific subreddit is a precise statement of what someone cares about. Build the list manually, including the smaller ones – that is where the concentration is.
- What budget does a real test need?
- Enough conversions to read a result, which for most accounts means a few thousand dollars over three to four weeks. Reddit needs longer than Meta to settle, and a two-week test at minimum spend will tell you nothing either way.
- Why is Reddit worth attention beyond ads?
- Because it is roughly 24% of all citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and it ranks in the organic results for most commercial queries we checked. Paid reach is one reason to be there. Being the thing AI answers quote is arguably the bigger one.
- Can you handle organic participation too?
- No, and be wary of anyone who says yes. Reddit communities detect and punish astroturfing, and the damage from being caught outlasts any short-term gain. Organic participation has to come from real people at your company who actually use the product.
